Biography

Hong Kong-born Canadian pianist Aidan Cheng began learning piano at the age of 6 and has since charmed audiences and judges alike with his powerful and thoughtful musical interpretations. 

Aidan has participated and received awards in a variety of competitions such as the David D. Dubois Piano Competition, Concours de musique du Canada, Canadian Chopin Competition, Joseph Bologne International Piano Competition. He has also taken part in summer festivals such as the Vancouver Piano Sessions and Orford Academy of Music under scholarship. Aidan has worked with many distinguished pianists including Boris Slutsky, Arthur Greene, Ronon O’Hora, Marina Lomazov and many others. He has performed in many famous venues such as the Roy Thomson Hall, Isabel Bader Theatre and the Meridian Arts Centre. Aidan recently played with the Greater Toronto Philharmonic Orchestra as a soloist under the baton of Maestro Lorenzo Guggenheim and is looking forward to working with Maestro Kristian Alexander of the Kindred Spirits Orchestra as a soloist in the near future.

Aidan is also an experienced collaborative pianist and enjoys performing chamber music. Having recently held the piano/celesta position of the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra in its 51st season, Aidan was a part of the TSYO piano quintet and has been involved in the community through the Kingston Road Young People's Concerts, where he promoted music to the next generation alongside many other TSYO instrumentalists. In addition to being a pianist, he is an accomplished double bassist with over 10 years of orchestral experience and an award-winning composer mentored by Dr. Roydon Tse.

 

Aidan is a first year undergraduate piano performance major at the Eastman School of Music, studying with Professor Alexander Kobrin. Prior to pursuing his undergraduate studies, he was under the tutelage of Dr. Younggun Kim.
